BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS, OUR JAVA-TEAM JOINED FORCES WITH THE NONPROFIT COMPANY CZECHITAS FOR A TERRIFIC EVENT. CZECHITAS PROVIDES IT EDUCATION TO WOMEN AND GRADUALLY ENDS THE MYTH THAT A CAREER IN IT IS JUST FOR MEN.

Although there are not many women in IT, it does not mean that they’re not interested in the subject and don’t want to succeed in it. Courses full of women, enthusiastic about programming, are good evidence of this.

Their inspirational stories show that we can find promising software designers, analysts, testers or programmers among them. It is very enjoyable and a great motivation for Ness to participate in their education.

What started in May as a one-day workshop on the basics of Java programming, is now followed by Digital Academy – a series of intensive courses for women who are Java-beginners.”

In the course of the Digital Academy, students develop logical reasoning – they find there are always several ways to create a solution, and they learn to interpret the instructions and solve various programming challenges.

The main objective is to get the participants to develop the basics of Java and work with different tools in the compulsory and optional courses during three months.

After the first workshop I was pleasantly surprised that the knowledge of many women had been greater at the beginning of the course than I expected. Naturally, many of them were struggling with Java, but that is the reason we run the courses. A lot of them understood very well what they were doing. That motivates me to continue the training.

The study will be relatively time-challenging and requires coordination with teachers three days a week. In addition, the students are quite busy with self-study and homework outside the training days.

But at all times there are mentors who love to help.

The Academy finishs with an all day hackathon, during which the Java students apply the knowledge they acquired. In small teams, they solve a real task as their final project.

After three months of intensive study, a skillful graduate can join our team as a Junior Java developer.

When developing web applications, Java is used daily. Teams in Ostrava, Brno, České Budějovice, and Prague see Java as a progressive and widely usable language with a rapid learning curve.

At Ness, we also regularly organize Javacoms – meetings where we discuss trends, and share the experience of professional conferences and our successful projects.

A mentor is assigned to every newbie, who will then acquaint her or him with their expertise. To do this, we have prepared an internal adaptation process for each newbie that makes it easier to understand the new technology. In short: there’s no reason to fear Java at Ness.

How are the newbies getting on in Ness?
